I have a new cork gasket, and
have the knobs as tight as I can get them by hand. Should I use
anything else?
[Lew Palmer] Try putting a good RTV sealant between the gasket and the
head surface. Leave the upper surface of the gasket to mate dry with the
rocker cover.

Also, just a question.
After the rebuild the engine was very quiet, but after about 500
miles it developed pretty significant tappet tap.
[Lew Palmer] Despite the onset of the "clackety tappets" after the fan
incident, I find that a common source of tappet noise is the tappets
hitting the inside of the rocker box. This is particularly common with
cast alloy rocker boxes. Look for evidence of scraping on the inside of
the rocker box.

 Lew Palmer
