Bill:

Another source of play is wear between the rack housing's bore
and the steel rack.  This allows the rack to "rattle" around
inside the housing especially on the side where there is no
adjustment.  I don't know if the housing could be rebuilt or
not.  I had to buy a good used one at the time I replaced mine
back in the early 70's.
