Bob,

The free length of my PB0560 gear shift lever is dead on 3-3/4" above the
gate.

Cheers,
Lew Palmer

Subject: PA-0531 gearbox

I appear to have successfully re-assembled my PA gearbox with all new
bearings ( except 3rd gear ) and good bearing surfaces. The box somehow had
water in it so the shafts, selector rods and selectors were rusted. Also the
rear recess for the needle roller of the input ( clutch ) shaft was rusted,
pitted and rough. The male end of the output shaft, which fits into the
needle/roller, was also rough and pitted. I didn't want to install a new
needle roller into this rough and worn area. I could get the male end welded
and ground back to the original 0.625" diameter, but the hole in the rear of
the input shaft was a much greater problem. Thanks to advice from John
Needham in Australia who suggested a workable and inexpensive solution. John
suggested grinding out the recess to 1.010" ( stock size 1.000 " ), grinding
down the output shaft spigot to 0.615" ( stock 0.625" ) and using 5 x 25 mm
loose needle bearings to make up the difference. Original needle rollers
were 0.1875", 5 mm needles are 0.1968" diameter. Resultant needle roller
clearance is about 0.001". I used grease to hold the needle rollers in the
recess of the input shaft and the rear mainshaft slid right into place.
Hopefully this will quiet down the gearbox. Old ball bearings were all
rough, rust pitted and loose.

Now trying to get remote lever rebuilt to remove most of the free play. I
need a new gear lever as the ball on the lower end is far too small for the
recess in the remote. Also the chrome is poor. Who can supply a new gear
lever?

Second question, what is the height of the gear lever above the gate to the
top end of the steel lever? Mine measures 3 3/4". I don't know if some DPO
has shortened the lever or not. Does 3 3/4" appear about right?

Third, I think the PA has an octagonal gear lever knob, anybody got a spare
to trade? I have original octagonal knobs for the choke and slow running. I
may use one of these for the gear lever if nothing better comes along.

Now to tackle the PA gearbox rubber mounts!!
Hope this is of interest.
