problems with that idea: One, finding a way to securely mount a single GEEZ
set-up in several different cars during a single track day. Especially since
the mounting system would have to work without modifying the vehicle in any
way. Two, downloading and analyzing the data quickly enough to give the
students prompt feedback while still allowing me time to drive my own car.
On the other hand, for my own car, it sounds like a perfectly usable tool.
Perhaps as I use it, I'll figure-out how to get around those two problems in
using it in student's cars. >>
I moved my GEEZ setup into several cars at one eventand it was not a big
deal. Each car had a console with a latching lid, so we just put the cube in
the bottom of the console and stuffed a towel on top of it and slammed the
lid down. It worked fine, the graphes were smooth, no sign of the cube moving
around at all. It has almost no mass to it. The palm and 9 volt battery bx
were just stuffed between the passenger seat and console. On one run it did
slip out and end up on the passenger side floor. Didn't get the run logged
either since the plug came out of the palm. The car was a Vette, so the palm
stayed on the passeneger side, the tunnel is huge in those cars. Sure would
suck if it ended up under the brake pedal ;-) In my car, I had strong
velcro for everything. But the cube actually did wiggle in the velcro a bit,
so I had it clamped with a towel in my console also, even wit the velcro
under it.
At Nationals in 2000, we had the laptop booted up with GEEZ running and ready
to download. As soon as the car came in, we just pulled out the palm and
dropped it into the cradle. Only takes a few seconds to download a run, then
we put it back in the car to have ready for the next run. There was easilly
enough time to get the map up and look for mistakes. We even had 2 drivers
and I was able to view them both. Of course my wife was in ESL running with
CP so there were 60 some odd cars in the heat. But even a normal nationals
heat would be fine. I figure it took less than 5 minutes to get the info up
on screen. I had my best run from the morning on screen for comparison too.
I remember seeing a picture of me crouched in front of my computer with a
jacket over my head to see it in the sunlight. I can't remember where it was
though, probably online.
