Damn, damn, damn, damn. He was such a wonderful guy. I bought a
couple of his pictures over the years and the back wall of my office
is a little Phil Hill Shrine. My favorite racing memory of all time
was getting to race with him at the Pacific Northwest Historics in
Peyote. After he passed me in the 340MM Carrera Panamerica Ferrari
(Now THAT was a thrill) the carbs were going lean in Big Indy and I
pulled up to his door on the inside, scared spitless that I might
scratch his car. The carbs caught some fuel and he disappeared like
the roadrunner does--he just got small.
After the race I went over to shake his hand and he was reliving the
race talking with some other guys, just like any other car nut would,
talking and laughing about passes and corners and cars. I shook his
hand and he asked which car was mine. When I told him he said "What is
IN that thing?" I told him it was a TR3 in drag and he got really
animated, told me his first race car was a TR3 and he still loved 'em.
I was walking on air for days. It was like God telling you he liked
your car.
