Actually, there is another way.  If you don't mind drilling an appropriately 
sized hole in the backing plate you can insert new, longer studs through the 
hole.  I used that technique to put long ARP studs on my car - then used a lug 
nut to "pull" the stud into the flange.  If you're careful, you can drill the 
hole in the right spot and then use a rubber plug to seal it back up if so 
desired.
Doing it this way doesn't require pulling the collar off of the axle which is a 
PITA.
