If anyone in Los Angeles wants to buy an engine hoist (a real industrial
strength one) I want to get rid of mine. Too old to pull any more engines. $100

Yes, a leveler is essential in my experience. I also use a floor jack under
the
transmission to get the back of it on top of the mounting crossmember. I
think
the key is to take it slowly and make sure all the tight points are OK
along the
way. A bit of muscling the around it the bay is helpful, but it's
suspended by
the hoist, so it's not too difficult. I pulled & reinstalled my
engine/trans
twice last year by myself, and it certainly gets easier with
practice.

Agreed! You
need to start with the transmission pointing slightly down in
order to get
under the firewall and get the motor past the front cross
member. Then as you
go back the transmission needs to come up to get over
the transmission mount.
The leveler works perfectly for that and you keep
the motor / transmission
assembly under perfect control in the process,
greatly reducing the
possibility of banging into and damaging something in
the engine compartment.
