I sent this to Leonard already, but thought I would go ahead and forward it
to the list. I know some states are very particular about the plate being
original, and others allow repainted plates as long as they look original.
Mine will either be in the garage or on the front bumper of my '48. Message
to Leonard is below

Subject: RE: License plate - protective sealant/spray?
Rustoleum has a clear product that should help. That would be good for the
front. You could use it on the back, as well. Then, of course, there's
POR15 and XORust paint. You can find XO paint at TruValue. POR15 can be
found locally, but easier to find online. If it were me, I'd clean the
front well, and seal it with the rustoleum and either use the rustoleum or
the XORust on the back after wirebrushing it. Myself, I have a plate from
1948 that I have with my Dodge. I wanted to preserve the rust and patina on
it, so I coated everything with the clear rustoleum. It's been a couple
years and it seems to be holding up really well. Good luck.
