I had such a problem getting my 2L intake manifold water passages to seal.
listening to Gordon solved my problems. I tourqed the bottom first leaving
the top loose. This WILL be my method from now on. YMMV

I don't have any reference material at hand to look up the torque values,
but the sequence
is from inside to outside, starting in the center and working outwards
alternating to the
left and right of center; the torque values should be stepped up, also,
taking it in 2,
maybe 3, steps depending upon the final value.

This is a general rule for securing a manifold, or any component that
secured by threaded
fasteners in a generally rectangular pattern, especially a component which
must seal
against its mating part. Working inside to outside, alternately left and
right, and
stepping up the torque will prevent distortion. A cylinder head is another
example of a
component which should be torqued up in this fashion.
