Rob,

When I had points I had the same problem when using the factory specs and
did as you did. I got fed up and installed a Petronix. I will be installing
a Crane 3000 in the future as it's the uprated model of the cheaper 700
series. With the 3000 you don't need a ballast resistor and can run really
hot coils and get a better burn than either the Petronix or 700.

BTW - the 3000 is about 150 and the coil.
