Rear Wheel Seal

Last month I had the pleasure (?) of rebuilding my rear axles. I had
developed the notorious "wet brake" in the drive wheel, where the seals fail
and the differential oil leaks past and washes out the grease from the wheel
bearing. I replaced basically everything. It was a bear of a job that I
would never had been able to do in one day without the use of the shop and
guidance of a good friend.

Now another friend has the Wet Brake Syndrome as well. I was wondering if he
might get away with just replacing the inner seal. This would be A LOT less
work and less expensive. If there is no damage to the bearing yet, Is there
a real need to replace it?

I've warned him to beware of driving this car too much until he fixes this
problem. From what I've heard, It does not take too long before the oil
washes the bearing clean and then the bearing fail catastrophically. Do I
have this right?
