You should be able to pull the cabe assy out and carefully remove one side of 
the mechanism.  Check to see that it is clean inside.  It's been about 6 months
since I repaired mine (replaced the cables), but as I recall there is a flat
spring and a roller that moves back and forth in the assembly.  Make sure
that everyting moves and then put it back together and give it a try.  You
should be able to pull the knob out and push it in easily, but when you 
pull on the choke cable the knob shuld not move in.
