Right! If you take your car to a shop, check it over before taking it in.
Even mark various parts so you will know if they were removed or replaced.

And I'm not just talking about small shops. I've had some bad experiences
with some Nissan dealors here in the San Francisco area. They may charge
you for work that wasn't done and parts that weren't installed. I've argued
with the service manager that work wasn't done, he would show me a
checklist with everything checked off. Then I would drag him to the car and
show him lube points that were untouched, air conditioning access points
untouched, filler nuts untouched, etc. Then the car would go back on the
lift for real work.

They get away with it because most people assume they do the work they
charge you for. A long time ago at one service station I worked for, we got
a new manager and he was telling us to install used parts while he charged
for new ones. I refused and was let go, and glad that I was no longer
working for him. It's your money, make sure you get the repairs done
correctly.

I have found that talking a car in for a tune up does not mean they do a
complete tune up. Just enough to get the car running smoothly. Like
adjusting the points, instead of changing them. not replacing the Condenser.
Changing 1 or 2 plugs, not all of them. You are better off getting the parts
and putting them in yourself, even if it means making mistakes. There are
not many mistakes to make, and you can correct them. Pat
