My letters are actually secured with what appears to be aquarium air
tubing. It works pretty good too. Just cut enough to fit over the stub
and leave a little extra, and then push it own securely down to the base.

Someone else recommended small diameter hose. I use something similar.
Very short lengths of PVC hose sliced in hald and a hold drilled in the
center. Works well, inexpensive and easy to remove without breaking the
prongs.
