A few times I've had the same problem with my starter. Although I whack it
with a tire iron instead of whanging it (ouch). Mike Young told me that's a
sign that the starter is about to fail and it's time to replace it. The
only times it's happened to me is after long trips of driving the car hard
so I guess heat may be a primary factor.

Hey Daniel-

Think of it this way - starter is maybe a little old. Wire is maybe a little
corroded. A little of this with a little of that will keep it from working,
where a little corrosion or a little age alone would not. Kind of a Zen
approach?

By whanging on it, you probably loosen it up inside, or make the hot wire
contact
better, or otherwise influence the hidden inner workings of the starter circuit.

Another thing to check, if memory serves, is the hot lead from the solenoid to
the
starter motor; perhaps it's loose/corroded.

If I understand things properly (a rarity at times;-) the solenoid, when engaged
by the trigger wire, moves the starter pinion out AND turns the motor on. So
maybe
your solenoid is gummed up (or bent from being whacked upon!) and isn't getting
enough juice to activate it over this increased load. Perhaps you can open
the solenoid up and clean it out? I've never been there myself, so YMMV!

And goodness gracious, get that lower bolt in there!
