The U20 SOHC design is very similar to the Mercedes of the same era. The finger followers were an unusual design. Most OHC designs of that time had the cam directly over the valve stems with a a small shim type tappet in between. You would be very thankful for the Datsun/Mercedes designs if you have ever attempted a valve adjustment on a Jaguar XK, or even worse Alfa DOHC engines of the same vintage.
