Keep the pump down low, and as far back as possible. Electric pumps, by
nature, "push" better than they "pull". (Engineering types feel free to step
in & explain why...) By putting it up above tank level (eg: trunk,) gravity
will drain the pump, and it will have to re-prime itself every time. Same
undue stress when mounted up in the engine compartment- they just don't
"suck" like a mechanical pump. These both put extra wear-n-tear on the pump
and will shorten it's life considerably. There are some high-dollar pumps out
there with provisions for a return-line feed to keep their prime, but even
then, they recommend a "below sea level" location.
Confession: yes, I did a quickie roadside repair on mine, and stuffed the
electric up in the engine compartment, BUT I did have the advantage, working
in a parts store, to trade it back in as defective on a regular basis with no
questions asked <G>.
