With the MSD you can use an after market or stock coil but the after
market one would be better performance wise. The ballast resistor could
be used or not since it is there to protect the points.  With the MSD
the points become just a trigger with no load so it would make little
difference.
To the temp. question I set my electric fan to operate at the same time
as the thermostat opens.  Hope this helps Daniel
