take off the manifold?

No -- take the starter off from the bottom, remove the wheel/tire, then if a
triangular piece of shield/metal seems to be blocking you, cut it out with a
sawzall (it keeps mud off the starter and can be replaced with galvanized
sheet metal), undo the two bolts, disconnect the wires, and slide the
starter out. it comes out easy (at least mine did). To take it out from the
top will require that you undo the manifold, carbs, etc., and its still very
hard to do and will make you crazy. BTW, be sure to undo the battery while
all this is going on.
