Dave,

The L16 conversion is possible, but is requires some modifications.
First, let me mention that Stan Chernoff(SP?) used to sell an L-Series
conversion kit for roadster. This includes modified engine mounts, alt
brackets, etc.

Main problem you run into with the L-Series engine is the height of the
engine. It's taller than the original R16/U20. In addition, the oil pump
on the L-Series sits fairly low on the engine, making it necessary the
heat-up (Torch) and bang the front cross-member around, so the oil pump
can fit in.

In addition, several of your gauges may not work properly. Also, there
will be minor electrical rewiring needed.

Now for the good side....The L-Series engine is a great, reliable
engine. They just keep running. Performance Parts are available and are
quite reasonably priced.

BUT...If you do consider the swap....don't use the original 4spd out of
the 68 510. Upgrade to the z-5spd, which are plentiful in the wrecking
yards.

Good Luck,

a 68 Datsun Wagon (I believe it is a 510) in a 1600 roadster. I am
just exploring some options, and I am wondering if this is something
that can be done without a ton of problems.
