All my life I've wanted an MGB, and now that my Tercel is dying I am thinking
of buying one. There are two problems: 1) I know nothing about MGBs, and 2)
I know nothing about auto repair. (OK, I know enough about MGBs to know that
#2 might be a real problem). I would plan on keeping the Tercel in running
condition as a back up car.
So I have some questions:
1) What are the different types of MGBs, what are good years for them, etc.
A pointer to a good introductory book would be very much appreciated.
2) Will I be able to keep it on the road for less than $1000/year? Less than
$500? I can change spark plugs, and add water to radiators, but that's about
the limit of my mechanical abilities. On the other hand, I have a book and am
willing to tinker.
3) What is a reasonable price to pay?
4) How safe are they? Can I add modern brakes? Will this cause all the
purists to hate me? How about seats with whiplash rests? (How about a
Miata engine?)
