Gas and LBCs

I had an interesting experience this last week. I will give some
background info first. I have a '77 B with a '65 hi-comp engine, with
'72 HIF4 carbs attached. Well since I have come to Phoenix in Feburary
of this year, I have had a heck of a time with the LBC. I thought up
until last Friday that I had found a gas station that I could decent
petro from, I always use the same station and the same pump, I never vary.

Well last Friday I got gas as usual, and was on my way to go and meet
Dennis at the Duck and Decanter. That went as expected, except when I
got to the D&D the car was running rather bad at idle. I thought it
might be related to driving it very hard on the way there (5k rpms in
4th), and the car was a little warm becaquse of this. Well I was at the
Duck for about threee hours. When I got ready to leave the car was still
not running well, in fact it did not want to start very easy. So I
figured that I had driven it little too hard too long. The funny thing
is once I got it up in the revs it "SEEMED" to run OK.

It was running on the lean side, so it was running warmer than usual,
also it was pinging a little at lower RPMs. So I figure that I will
adjust the timing and carbs. This was to no avail. So I start checking
the fuel pump and regulator to see if something is amiss there. Well
when I crawled up under the car and fiddled with the fuel regulator the
fuel pump started to pump fuel like crazy to the carbs as if they were
dry. I have one of those dial type regulator that adjusts from 0 - 5.5,
I can't recall the brand off-hand, but it was set at 2.5 like it always
is. I pop the regulator and check it for blockage, there was none. So I
decide to test the fuel pump to see if it is working as advertised, it
pump like crazy, so I figure there is not a problem there.

So I am driving my car to and from work only so as not to damage
anything. The gas mileage is very poor this week I notice, less than 200
miles on a full tank of petro. So last night I need to get more petro as
the gauge is registering in the red region of the gauge. Well I drive
less than five miles and the car is back to its old self again. Starts
good, runs at normal tempature, and idles just like it did before I put
the petro in it before last Friday. The only difference was that I had a
suspision that it might be the petro from last week, so I try a new gas
station and another pump.

My question is has anybody experienced this before? Is it worth going
and complaining to the station owner/manager? Or any other thoughts or
comments?

Thanks,

Bruce...
