Yes, there's a difference between ST2 and STS2.
In a nutshell, STS2 was created by the SEB, and the rules are
basically identical to STS except that the allowed cars are 2-seaters
with a 1.9L displacement limit. The '99- Miatas and MR2 Spyders are
specifically excluded.
ST2 was created by a grassroots group and was adopted by at least 3
regions including SFR. It is also based on the STS rules but with
more allowances. Eligible vehicles include anything classed in CS,
ES, GS, or HS, that's not already allowed in STS or STX. Factory
Torsen LSDs are allowed.

That's what a lot of people seem to think. The official response to
"you should allow helical/Torsen LSDs in STS2" is: "But that would be
STX2, now wouldn't it?" Maybe they should have started with STX2.

A Miata R is legal in ST2.
Oh, and STX is an official national class like STS that allows
turbocharged cars and any limited slip differential.
