The hardest autox skill for me to master is the mental game. Thinking
ahead, blocking everything else out of my mind - to me, that's the
difficult part of autoxing. Being able to put stuff aside, to not spend
mental cycles critiquing the last corner I drove, or diagnosing the weird
clunk I just heard, or marvelling over the amount of grip my tires have at
Oakland vs. GGF, or getting excited because the run up to now feels really
good, is just really, really tough.
Besides thinking ahead, there's the ability to rein in the aggression, yet
leave enough to get a fast run. To ride that fine line between being in
control and losing it totally. Also the ability to come out firing with
your very best, instead of taking a run to sort things out and get in a
groove, which seems to be key for the larger events.
Everything else is just muscle memory... :-)
