1) Until we (SFR) get a handle on how many entrants we are going to have at
"out of town" events, 4 runs can be a real problem. And I'm not sure I've
ever seen anyone actually have a handle on the severity of the problem in
time to cut back to 3 runs in time to make it effective.
2) The way this game is played at the higher levels involves a 3 run format.
At Divisionals, National Tours and Nationals, you have to come up with your
best effort in 3 runs. Having 4 runs allows the competitor to approach the
game differently. Then when he/she gets to the big event, the rules have
changed, and it's difficult to learn a different approach for that all too
important event.
3) 4 runs for trophy points causes competitors to use 33% more tires to
chase the trophy. Not a big deal at Oakland, but if we do a lot of events on
the more abrasive surfaces, some of us might really feel the pinch. At least
the fun runs are optional for those who want to take them.
