If I could go back in time, I would
a) start out in stock, but perhaps even slower stock (say, E or H
instead of C),
b) run on street tires until I learned better autox technique (rather
than letting the race tires compensate for some of my mistakes).

While horsepower may well magnify mistakes (as pointed out by CM drivers
a few months back), it also serves the function of making you feel like
you are going really, really fast, and your raw times may be better than
slower cars'. The ONLY way to be really fast in an HS car is to be a
good driver. (This is true in other classes, too, of course, all the way
up to AM; but the lack of power forces you to drive well to compete, I
think.)

YMMV, IMHO, etc., yada, yada, yada--but one national champ TOLD me that
the trophies they won this year and last were directly due to several
previous years of driving ES & HS and having to improve their drving
because the horsepower couldn't make up for mistakes.
