As someone who has driven and owned both, I'd say it depends on the
course as to which is faster. Topeka tends to have courses that favor the
ST. In 97, I was 3rd in H at Topeka, I think I would have been 4th in
E....So, on paper, based on Topeka results only...the ST can be a
competitive E car AT Topeka.

Now, a lot of regions/clubs will have courses with tight corners,
followed by fast straights...here's where the GT can really work. Sure,
it's got more power, so if you've got a "YEEEHAAAA" course, the GT will
beat the ST.

I actually drove both cars back to back today...on a fast/flowing course
that have very few slow-downs. I preferred the ST because of it's ability
to use ALL of it's power w/o wheelspin. The GT just lights them up w/o any
more forward momentum. Part of this was due to my finishing up of the last
of my R-1's on my GT and they are at the end of their useful lifespan...but
it was very clear that the ST gets the job done.

So...to be honest, I can't see any reason why they are in seperate
classes....I prefer to own the GT because of it's fun to drive quotient,
but on an autocross course, the ST is sure easy to work with.

FWIW, the SCAC has received letters from members that want the ST to move
to E. No one has written opposing this move. So, the people who are
worried about their ST's moving for Y2k should probably get their typing
fingers going...hint hint.
