Civic disobedience

I was watching my co-driver autox my '86 Civic Si on Saturday, and
noticed wisps of steam (I think) exiting the exhaust under
acceleration. Does that mean the headgasket is failing? Or...? It was
at the end of the day; the car was warm but not hot. Any advice would
be very appreciated.
