The 225 is taller? Not quite. Heavier maybe but not taller. That extra
measly 5% sidewall aspect ratio that the 205 tire has over the 225 makes it
ever so slightly taller.

Let's do the math together, shall we.

205 (mm of tread width) x 55% (aspect ratio) = 112.75mm sidewall height
(theoretically).
112.75 x 2 sidewalls = 225.5mm of total sidewall height.
225.5mm total sidewall + 355.6mm of wheel (14" x 25.4mm/inch) = 581.1mm
total height.

225 (mm of tread width) x 50% (aspect ratio) = 112.5mm sidewall.
112.5 x 2 sidewalls = 225mm total sidewall height.
225mm total sidewall height + 355.6mm wheel height = 580.6mm total height.

So, the 225/50 tire is actually ever so slightly shorter than the 205/55
tire. This assumes that all the measurement ratios are the same for each
tire. Remember, not everyones 205 width tire is going to measure exactly
205mm across. Apparently some of the manufacturers use different rulers
than you and I do.

Of course you were correct when you said that the 225 width tire weighs more
and that may cause more problems and outweigh any additional grip offered by
the wider tire. Or possibly not.

See you on course.
