See my Miata LSD page for the answers to some of your questions. The VLSD was
an option on base and 'A' package 1.6 Miata's while 'B' packages generally all
had them.
See also the FAQ section of www.Miata.net for some other buying advice. IMHO,
the 1992 is the best year 1.6 to autocross. It had the one additional rear
chassis brace over the 90-91 while the 1993 had very slightly softer springs
and one more door beam. The 90-mid 91 motor also had the early crank snout
design that was prone to breaking if the hub wasn't torqued just right when
the timing belt was changed.
There is a debate (although, does it actually matter?) of which model 1992 is
actually the better autocrosser. The base model was very light and weighed
anywhere from 2098-2116 lbs. (mine was 2113) while the 1992 LTD had ultralight
(~10.5lbs) 14x6" BBS wheels.
My only suggestion on a used car purchase is verify the the oil pressure and
compression and then plan on replacing the control arm bushings, they wear out
fast.
