As with anything, the value is what someone is willing to pay. But you knew
that. A corrosion free head is worth anywhere from 100-300 depending on the
valve and seat condition. A crankshaft is worth 100-200 depending on grind.
the rest of the motor isn't worth so much except for the replacement of
components. The block is worth 50-100 depending on bore. If the motor was
running and you could check oil pressure, knock, compression, etc. then the
package could be worth up to $500, maybe more depending on documentation or
replaced components. If he tries to disassemble it and sell the components,
he may open up a can of worms because the crank may be cracked, or the head
corroded. Since neither can be checked, a rebuildable core for just about
any engine can be had for 200 except for exotics or highly collectable cars,
I would say that 200 is about the going rate. He loses if the engine is
disassembled to show flaws, and he loses if it can not be demonstrated good.
You of course win in these cases. If the motor is sold as a set, for his
price, and upon disassembly turns out to be trash, then he wins and you
lose. If he sells a good crank, but is stuck with a block and crap that he
can't sell, he loses. Since it is a crapshoot, the best thing to do is make
his risk of loss and your risk of loss equal. 200-300 canadian sounds about
right to me. And remember, they are not making any more of these. Lou
