dots on gauges

while checking out eBay for new stuff I saw some
gauges and it got me to wondering what those small
dots are for. They are on the speedomenter at 30mph,
again at 70mph (pairs that seem to get wider) and
another pair at 110mph. The tach has the dots in the
same place. Also there are dots on oil gauge,
etc...Never knew what those dots meant...
