Kevin, in my experience I found that the absence of any thrust washers has
lead to a damaged block, as the crank now pushes on the front of the block.
I my first engine rebuild, a few years ago now, the block was ground by the
crank on the front. The machine shop mechanic told me that I had two
options. The first was to have the area built up and ground down, which he
did not recommend or find a new used block. I was able to locate a block
within a short distance from home and I was on my way again.
To be honest, not doing a complete job may cause more problems later. As the
crank has been forced forward so are the big ends of the rods affected, and
that means the small ends are affected, so on and so forth.

Just "IN MY HUMBLE OPINION"
