Jeff,
Don't be too surprised if you can't see them lit very well at night. They
never were very bright from the beginning. But yes you can take the rheostat
switch out and take it apart carefully and clean the contacts etc. I was able
to
do this on my previous Six but have not attempted on my current Six. If
contacts are dirty or corroded cleaning them up a bit may provide increased
voltage
for slightly brighter lamps. Be sure to check that both lamps on the speedo and
tach are working. The rest of the gauges have a single lamp. You may also
want to check the lamp connection sockets themselves as well as the metal tabs
around the lip that hold the socket in place as this serves as ground for some
lamp connections. Wipe off the lamp globes as dirt will block the little light
given off as well! A wire brush on a Dremel tool or similar works wonders on
these little electrical parts. You might as well get some dielectric grease to
reassemble to prevent future corrosion in the light sockets etc.
Good luck!
