Painting

I need some painting advice. I just had new rear valance welding in place and 
I'm doing the Finnish working and painting myself. Last night I primed the 
valance and today I tried to paint it with paint I ordered from Tower Paint. 
The 
first try didn't go well, it looks like there is little pin hole spots in the 
paint where it didn't take and the primer is showing through. What am I doing 
wrong or what should I be doing to get the proper finish?
