Cut below the highest piston height and it will crash into the head the first
time you
crank it.

You can cut the deck below the top of the piston without it smashing into
your valves.
The TR6 head gasket, even compressed, is still a pretty thick gasket. Also, by
decking the
block you aren't reducing the the combustion chamber which means you aren't
lowering
your valves in relation to where the head meets the block. You are bringing
the pistons
closer to the valves though. Anyone confused yet? When you do reduce the deck
so
much that the pistons stand proud of the block you do need to worry about rod
stretch
though. Said rod stretch, I've been told, is generally not a problem below
6,000 rpm
though.
BTW, my pistons stand proud of the block by .015, the head has barely been
shaved and
my CR is just north of 10.7:1. Maintaing the shape of the combustion chamber
theoretically yields a much better burn characteristic for improved efficiency
resulting in
more power as well. It is all the little bits that add up after all.
