Mark---If the alternate distributor is still available to you, use it as
the control. Take off and try each main part of the control unit, one by
one, trying that part on your own distributor. First the cap and wires,
(coil wire included) If the miss still is there, next change the rotor,
etc. until nothing is left but the basic distributor. It's possible that
it (the bushings) is worn so much as to be not allowing the points to
open on occasion, or open too far, which can also cause a misfire. This
can usually be determined by testing with a dwell meter. If the meter
can't hold an angle between 32 and 38 degrees, the distributor needs
rebushed or replaced.
