Hi

Double check fuel float and valve in SU carbs as it may be fuel starvation
on 3 Cylinders this can also happen as vapour lock on a hot day and or if
engine is running particularly warm a heatshield from exhaust helps. Also
check that full throttle is available on both the carbs.

Subject: Strange lack of power

Hi

I am a new list member. I do not actually own a 2000 but my eldest son
David, has just bought a 1975 model.

Back in the 1960s I served an apprenticeship with a Standard Triumph
Dealers in Gloucester, UK, so although it was quite a while back I am
reasonably conversant with the model. I also ran a TR6 for 8 years until
the early 1990s.
My usual set of wheels is Jaguar in some form or other. I also maintain
some of the jag-lovers mailing lists.

Anyway I have to admit defeat, I cannot figure out what is wrong with it.

The fundamental problem is that it has no power and will not rev beyond
half revs. Sounds like a bus or lorry then.
Tickover and low revs appear very sweet.

Items that I have checked are:-
Distributor capacitor for open circuit.
Ignition timing and points.
Removal of spark plug leads one by one shows a consistent drop of power on
each cylinder.
The spark plugs look as though they are running on the lean side.
Both SUs have been apart looking for fuel blockage.
SUs mixture is OK (why do modern SUs not have a lift pin for the piston?)
SUs balance is OK as well.

It does seem to run better if the SU dampers are loaded with a heavy oil.
Problem does seem to hint of a fueling issue.

The car is fairly low mileage (nearly 60k) and looks like it as well - very
clean.
Apparently the engine was rebuilt some time ago (crankshaft attention), but
that only equates to 50 miles running since then.

Has anyone experienced such a lack of power with their car?
Any suggestion would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Roly
