 In my experience, best to remove the upright for pressing out the stub shaft. Remove the nyloc nut from the inner end of the spindle while the upright is still in the car. After stripping the upright, run a 1/2-20 hex nut (not nyloc) onto the inner end of the spindle and run it down flush with the end of the spindle. this will support the threads during pressing and keep the spindle from flying out when it breaks loose. in the press, apply pressure to the inner end of the spindle and hex nut. If you have a lot of pressure on the ram and the spindle isn't moving, tap the upright sharply with a hammer and drift in a horizontal direction before cranking up the pressure.
