British car museum (previously BMIHT) should able to tell you. They used to use engine numbers to provide Heritage Certificates. However, it’s worth remembering that any info they might provide could be suspect as there’s always a possibility the engine now in the car may not be the one that earlier in the cars life and with another owner, an engine change was undertaken.
