72 TR6 A type overdrive

Been a few years since I have done this so of course I forgot to check to make sure the car was in neutral before I removed the top of the transmission.

Got it all back together and the car is stuck in reverse.

I know I have to take the top off again.  my question is do I move the shift lever down to reverse before I reassemble or do I try to get the tranny back in neutral?
