That's like my favorite torque spec: Torque till break then back off 1/4 turn.

I don’t recall needing to remove the caliper bracket when removing the trunnions, but that was 30 years ago so it could have faded in my memory. Looks like they are coming off. Glad I checked!

You should thread the trunnions as far as possible while still retaining full lock-to-lock steering. The caliper bracket along with the steering lock will need to be removed to do this.
