Hi, I remember 4-5 quarts with my TR3A. I get it from Kendall in Oil City, PA. It's cheaper than TRF and has ZDDP. Have fun, Joe  917 232 1555

 I return.

After a long hibernation, I am back in the British car world. I bought a 1956 Morgan, that sports a TR4 motor. Hopefully, that makes me somewhat TR worthy.

I am doing some routine maintenance and need your help.

1. How many quarts of oil does a TR4 motor hold?

2. I installed the spin on filter adaptor. What is the best filter most people use? I bought the TRF version, but it seems there is a better version as I recall.

3. Is the oil weight used still 20-50, with the zinc additive from TRF?

Welcome back Steve, just finished rebuilding a 1954 Morgan with the TR3 engine.
1. 5 quarts with the stock oil pan
2. I like the WIX filter, same as NAPA brand.
3. Yes, 20-50 is the oil of majority choice. I use Valvoline VR-1.

The manual specifies 11 Imperial pints which are 20 ounces each.  That
equates to 6.875 US quarts.

So have 7 quarts on hand and expect to use most of it.

For the filter, if it is the same as the TR6 spin on, look up a 1996
Ford Mustang V6.? You should get the Fram PH3600 and similar models.?
This info should let you pick your favorite brand.

First of all, don?t use FRAM.  Those filters are very low quality and don?t have a drainback valve.

WIX, and NAPA (same filter) are excellent choices.  51516  or 51438.  The NAPA number is 1516 or 1438.  Also Purolator L20195 will work. the spin on adapter for all TRs, MGA, MGB, etc all use the same filter.

For oil you can get the Valvoline Full Synthetic Racing Oil 20w-50 from advance auto; has the zddp you need.  Unfortunately Advance Auto doesn?t carry WIX but they do carry the Purolator so you can get it all in one order with free shipping.

Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 1 Quart 679082: Advance Auto Parts <https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/valvoline-vr1-racing-20w-50-full-synthetic-motor-oil-1-quart-679082/10069836-P?searchTerm=valvoline%2020w50%20full%20synthetic>

They have dropped the price $2!  Free shipping for orders over $35, which is about what you will need.

Here is the filter:  https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web/SearchResults?storeId=10151 <https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web/SearchResults?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&searchTerm=purolater%20L20195> &catalogId=10051&langId=-1&searchTerm=purolater%20L20195

I have heard people say that you shouldn?t use racing oil or synthetic  because blah blah blah.  Been using it for decades in my cars and they still run strong oil pressure.  I change the oil and filter about once a year.

I agree with Dave regarding Fram oil filters. I have been running the Purolator L20195 filters in my TR4A for a few years now and also change the filter and oil each year.
Regarding oil, I have been using Brad Penn 20-59 wt. but that is strictly my personal preference. Generally speaking, people who own these types of cars change their oil and filters often enough that as long as you use an oil containing additional zinc you will be fine.

It's a cold and rainy day here in Michigan - very Irish.  Killing time
looking at various cars and came across this 250:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203348631355?hash=item2f5885df3b%3Ag%3A1pgAAOSw4j1g
dxoh
<https://www.ebay.com/itm/203348631355?hash=item2f5885df3b%3Ag%3A1pgAAOSw4j1
gdxoh&LH_ItemCondition=3000%7C1000%7C2500>
&LH_ItemCondition=3000%7C1000%7C2500

Looks like a TR4 hood/bonnet and 4A grille with no appropriate badges on the
trunk/boot either.  No stripe.  But the seats look to be correct for a 250.
Is that dash correct?

Andrew,

Insane price. Are the 250's really worth that amount?

The hood doesnt have the stripe in the front so it has been painted. I
dont believe the 250's had the TRIUMPH name in chrome letters on the
hood. And didn't the trunk have a 250 logo? Or maybe the rear fenders?
No photos of interior or engine bay.

If you scroll down you will see additional pictures.  Interesting that the
car has SU carbs - that's not original.

Looks like a TR4 hood/bonnet and 4A grille with no appropriate badges on the
trunk/boot either.  No stripe.  But the seats look to be correct for a 250.
Is that dash correct?

$45K for a non-overdrive car is pretty ambitious. Nice looking 250 though.
We hope to hit 70 degrees today here in Cincinnati, and weathermen are well, you know..

Some "TR250" badges are missing from the rear fenders, some from the
boot lid.? Dash looks basically right.? I think it is too glossy and the
latch on the glove box is from a TR4 or 4A not a 250.? 250s did not have
the finger pull on the bottom.? Steering wheel is not a TR250 wheel -
original ones had the spokes covered with padded vinyl.
