FYI – my local NAPA has Valvoline 20-50 VR1 on sale for $4.79 a quart, as a “Monthly Special”. Headed there now….

First of all, don’t use FRAM. Those filters are very low quality and don’t have a drainback valve.

WIX, and NAPA (same filter) are excellent choices. 51516 or 51438. The NAPA number is 1516 or 1438. Also Purolator L20195 will work. the spin on adapter for all TRs, MGA, MGB, etc all use the same filter.

For oil you can get the Valvoline Full Synthetic Racing Oil 20w-50 from advance auto; has the zddp you need. Unfortunately Advance Auto doesn’t carry WIX but they do carry the Purolator so you can get it all in one order with free shipping.

They have dropped the price $2! Free shipping for orders over $35, which is about what you will need.

Here is the filter: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web/SearchResults?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&searchTerm=purolater%20L20195

I have heard people say that you shouldn’t use racing oil or synthetic because blah blah blah. Been using it for decades in my cars and they still run strong oil pressure. I change the oil and filter about once a year.

For the filter, if it is the same as the TR6 spin on, look up a 1996 Ford Mustang V6. You should get the Fram PH3600 and similar models. This info should let you pick your favorite brand.

 I return.

After a long hibernation, I am back in the British car world. I bought a 1956 Morgan, that sports a TR4 motor. Hopefully, that makes me somewhat TR worthy.

I am doing some routine maintenance and need your help.

1. How many quarts of oil does a TR4 motor hold?

2. I installed the spin on filter adaptor. What is the best filter most people use? I bought the TRF version, but it seems there is a better version as I recall.

3. Is the oil weight used still 20-50, with the zinc additive from TRF?
