[TR] Clear/Amber Fog

And, to belabor the point to a fare thee well, I have roll-started old, generator equipped trucks that had either completely dead or even no batteries. The residual magnetism in the fields of an old generator can produce sufficient charging voltage to provide ignition current. Not so with alternators!

But it is true that “dead” batteries can recover sufficiently to feed the coil. And thinking of driving techniques, parking a vehicle anticipating how it should be positioned for easy starting is sort of like anticipating how you will turn around when driving an empty, 2WD pickup when there is snow on the ground!

I've had cars in the past, Randall, where I'd choose the shutoff point so it was pointed a bit downhill when I got back to it. We don't need no stinkin' starter motors!

True, but very rarely is the battery stone cold dead (unless you left the
lights on). With points (unlike many electronic ignitions), the engine will
still fire at cranking speeds even with the battery discharged below the
point where it's normally considered "dead". Lead acid batteries even
recover (just a little) when sitting idle; so if the engine was running when
you got home, there is almost certain to be enough left to fire the plugs
the next morning.

But when I used to fight with the lack of generator capacity, many years
ago, I didn't own a hand crank. So I got adept at push-starting the car by
myself. Probably couldn't do it today, though.
