Eight months ago I came across a smallmouth TR3 which was the worst case of rot I have seen to date. I bought it as a parts car but as I left the seller said his father had bought the car new in 1957, had gotten married in it, and had driven it from one coast to the other (with pics to prove it). The old man was now in a nursing home and his wish was that he could get one last drive in the car. So the seller (his son) asked if he could buy it back if I were to restore it.

Yesterday I fired the car up and went through all the gears and overdrive with the car in the air (since it was raining here). This has been the most time-consuming and frustrating restoration I have done, but (apart from putting a couple of hundred miles on the clock) it is done – see pic.

Sadly the old man passed away last month. He was cremated, but the family has delayed the funeral until June so I can get the car finished and back to them for dad’s last drive !!

It is a touching story and I am glad to have played a part in it. Watch out for an article in VTR later in the year.

Andrew

Oh – and the reason I replied to Geo’s email? Because I will never take on a rust bucket like this again !!!

Tom -

At this point in my life I only buy rust free cars with their original paint - I am not smart enough to judge a car's condition once it has been re-painted and I am too old to recover from bad surprises. I can't say what the TR6 is worth but a savvy buyer should be willing to pay a premium for that condition.

A lifelong friend recently died. He bought a 69 TR6 new (White w Red interior). He put it in storage some 20 plus years ago. I have known this car it's entire life. Was excellent un wrecked history when it went to storage.
His brother is wanting to sell the car to cover medical expenses. I will look at it first of the week to evaluate storage damage but know it was in a secure dry building. looking for input on a fair value for this car
