[TR] Will a 'out-of-spot' tappet necessarily be higher, like this?

I'm wondering if a cylindrical magnet on an extendable rod (probably $4.99 at your local FLAPS) that fits through the head?  I've never tried it, mind you.  A brass or bronze rod to keep it in place as you dislodge the magnet?
