What car/engine ?  I would certainly clean the pickup screen if it's dirty;
but if it's a TR2-4 engine the screen very likely needs to be replaced.  The
factory part has a design flaw where the wires break right at the surface of
the solder blob that hold the screen to the pickup tube.
