Since you have that inner lip  (which should be a snug fit)  it doesn't 
take much to get it to seal up

worst case...a very thin bead of high temp rtv..VERY sparingly .

worst experience.. a guy dinged up the surfaces with a screw driver 
prying the ring out,
notebook paper to make super thin gasket, covered in the obligatory 
ultra thin layer of Hylomar has lasted 10+ years
