[TR] adding wire wheels

Yes, you need to shorten the studs for use with wire wheels.  About 5/16"
IIRC, but it's easiest to just install the adapter and special nuts, then
cut them off outside the nut.  That also lets the nut round off any burrs
the first time you remove them.  This is actually the procedure recommended
in the TR3 workshop manual, complete with a photo of the studs being cut
with a hacksaw.

Spacers will work too.  I suggest staying away from the universal fit ones,
as they can slip and upset wheel balance.  Several vendors sell them
purpose-made for TR2-6, eg
